Overview

Liquid cold plate machining to drawing

A liquid cold plate is a metal plate with internal coolant channels: the device mounts on its flat face and the coolant carries the heat away. We machine them to drawing for EV inverters, onboard chargers, DC-DC converters and battery modules, part of our EV components range.

OEM and Tier programs move from engineering samples and validation lots to pilot, low-volume and repeat production, with material traceability per batch and inspection reports on request, as set out in our order process.

What we machine

Cold plate constructions we machine

  • 01
    Machined channels, sealed lid
  • 02
    Deep-drilled channels, plugs
  • 03
    Press-in tube
  • 04
    Fins and microchannels
  • Machined channels, sealed lid

Serpentine or parallel channels are milled into the base and the lid is sealed with an O-ring and fasteners. Suited to medium to high heat flux, large flat plates and design changes between revisions; a fastened lid adds thickness and a seal to maintain.

    Construction guide
  • Deep-drilled channels, plugs

Straight passages are gun-drilled through a solid plate and closed with plugs. This gives simple, robust plates for low heat flux; paths stay straight and the surface area in contact with the coolant is limited.

  • Press-in tube

Copper or stainless steel tube is pressed into a grooved aluminum base, a low-cost route at moderate heat flux. Contact between the tube and the base limits thermal performance.

  • Fins and microchannels

When the heat flux needs more surface area, turbulators, skived or folded fins and microchannels are added. We choose the construction from the heat load and heat map, the footprint and mounting pattern, the allowable pressure drop and the volume per stage.

Challenge

Machining the liquid cold plate mounting surface

  • 01

    Device interface flatness and roughness

A warped or rough face leaves air gaps that the thermal interface material cannot fill. We machine the IGBT or SiC module seat with controlled flatness and roughness, checked by CMM.

  • 02

    Mounting hole position

The mounting holes locate the power module on its seat and set the clamping of the interface. We hold their position to the drawing during machining of the device face.

  • 03

    Wall between threads and channels

Blind threaded holes and threaded inserts must never break into a coolant channel. We place them so they stay clear and check the minimum wall to the channel against the model.

  • 04

    O-ring grooves and ports

O-ring grooves, port bosses and push-to-connect or O-ring boss ports seal the coolant loop. We machine them to your fitting specification and check port positions by CMM.

Materials

Liquid cold plate materials and coolants

  • Aluminum 6061 or 6063

For machined-channel plates: light, good conductivity, easy to machine and anodize. Hard anodizing or electroless nickel protects external surfaces where the drawing specifies it.

    Aluminum components
  • Copper C110 or C101

Higher conductivity for concentrated heat sources, at a higher weight. Copper and aluminum should not share a coolant loop without isolation: galvanic corrosion attacks the aluminum.

  • Stainless steel tube

Used as the tube in press-in tube plates when the coolant is aggressive, pressed into a grooved aluminum base.

FAQs

Liquid cold plate FAQ

Upload drawings
What does a cold plate mean?
A cold plate is a metal plate with internal coolant channels; the heat source mounts on its flat face and the liquid carries the heat to a radiator or chiller.
How long do cold plates last?
A sealed, leak-tested plate with a compatible, inhibited coolant is designed to last the life of the equipment. Corrosion and coolant chemistry are the usual limits, so material and coolant must be matched.
FSW or vacuum brazed: which should I choose?
FSW suits machined-channel plates of moderate complexity; vacuum brazing allows fine internal fins and multi-layer designs for higher heat flux. We recommend a construction after reviewing the heat load and volume; both are options available on request.
How are your cold plates leak tested?
By pressure testing, or helium leak testing where the specified leak rate requires it, to your leak rate and test pressure.
Can you build to our CAD and thermal simulation?
Yes, we manufacture to your drawings and give DFM feedback within 24 hours; your thermal design validation stays with your team.
What quantities do you produce?
From engineering samples and validation lots to low-volume and repeat production.
