Overview

EV battery housing machining to drawing

An EV battery enclosure carries the battery modules, seals them against water and dust, provides the thermal interface to the cooling system and sits in the crash load path. DekAutomotive machines its components to OEM and Tier drawings, from engineering samples through pilot and low-volume batches to repeat production.

We hold sealing-face flatness and keep material traceability, with inspection reports on request. These parts sit in our EV components family; BMS housings inside the pack are a separate family. See our order process.

What we machine

EV battery enclosure components we machine

  • 01
    Side frames and cross-members
  • 02
    Trays and floor plates
  • 03
    Lids and covers
  • 04
    Sealing flanges
  • 05
    Cooling-plate interfaces
  • Side frames and cross-members

Ends, pockets, bores and mounting faces machined on long aluminum profiles, often on 5-axis machines. We control length, hole position across the full frame and squareness of joint faces.

  • Trays and floor plates

Machined or cast trays with module seats, bosses and thin floors. We control the flatness of module seats, wall thickness and distortion after machining, with fixturing and roughing sequence set at the DFM review.

    Thin-walled housings
  • Lids and covers

Cover flanges and bolt patterns machined to your drawing. We control the flatness and roughness of the sealing face, where a machined tolerance becomes a leak-tightness requirement.

  • Sealing flanges

O-ring and FIPG (formed-in-place gasket) grooves and gasket faces. We control groove depth and width and face flatness, and check sealing features on a CMM, as in CMM inspection of complex housings.

  • Cooling-plate interfaces

Seats and fastening points for cooling plates under the modules, machined to your flatness callout. A flat, well-supported interface keeps the gap filler between modules and plate thin and even.

Challenge

What an EV battery enclosure part must hold

  • 01

    Sealing-face flatness and roughness

The sealing face is where a machined tolerance becomes a leak-tightness requirement. We machine cover flanges to the flatness and roughness on your drawing and check them on a CMM.

  • 02

    O-ring and FIPG groove geometry

Groove depth, width and face flatness decide how the seal seats. We machine O-ring grooves and FIPG bead seats to your drawing and check them on a CMM.

  • 03

    Thermal interface flatness

A flat, well-supported interface keeps the gap filler between modules and cooling plate thin and even. We machine cooling-plate seats and fastening points to your flatness callout.

  • 04

    Hole position to pack datums

Mounting points tie the pack to the body and hold internal brackets. We control hole position relative to the pack datums across full frames, with CMM inspection of mounting patterns.

  • 05

Distortion of thin floors and profiles

Large thin floors and long profiles move under residual stress, clamping force and cutting load. Fixturing, roughing and finishing sequence and datums are fixed at the DFM review.

Materials

Materials for EV battery housings

  • Aluminum extrusions

6061-T6, 6082-T6 and 6063 profiles for side frames and cross-members: low weight, and multi-chamber profiles absorb side impact energy. We machine ends, pockets and bores to drawing.

    Aluminum components
  • Cast aluminum

A380 and structural HPDC alloys such as AlSi10MnMg integrate ribs and bosses in one part. We machine cast blanks to your drawing; we do not produce die castings.

  • HSLA steel

Press-hardened and HSLA steel give high strength in crash with thin sections, at low cost. Chosen where cost or crash requirements dominate; we machine the steel the OEM specifies.

  • Magnesium covers

The lowest-weight option, with lower stiffness, used for covers. We machine magnesium covers only where the customer drawing specifies magnesium.

FAQs

EV battery enclosure FAQ

Upload drawings
What is a battery enclosure?
It is the structural, sealed housing that holds the battery modules, protects them from impact and water, and carries the cooling and mounting interfaces of the pack.
Aluminum or steel for an EV battery housing?
Aluminum, extruded or cast, saves weight and suits modular frame designs; steel costs less and is strong in crash, and many OEMs combine both. We machine to the material your drawing specifies.
Can you friction stir weld enclosure frames?
FSW is a construction option available on request; we confirm it at the DFM review for your frame.
How do you verify sealing?
By leak testing the enclosure or its sub-assemblies to your test pressure and leak rate, and by CMM checks of the sealing flanges.
What documentation do you supply?
On request, we supply the documents your program needs: FAI and inspection reports and material certificates with batch traceability. Parts are made under an ISO 9001-certified quality system. PPAP-style documentation on request (to validate by DEK), and IMDS data on request.
Do you build complete battery packs?
No. We manufacture machined enclosure parts; we do not assemble cells or electronics.
