Overview

Battery cooling plate machining to drawing

A battery cooling plate carries coolant under or between the battery modules. It removes the heat of charging and driving and keeps the pack temperature uniform. We build them to your drawing for EV packs and modules, alongside our EV components.

From engineering samples and pilot builds to low-volume and repeat production, you get a verified flat contact face, leak testing to your specification and batch traceability, as set out in our order process and documentation.

What we machine

Battery cooling plate designs we build

  • 01
    Bottom cooling plates
  • 02
    Machined channels, sealed lid
  • 03
    Integrated plate-in-tray
  • Bottom cooling plates

The most common layout: a large, thin plate under the modules, with a gap filler between cells and plate. Flatness and stiffness are the challenge, because any bow becomes a thicker gap filler layer and a hotter cell. Used with prismatic, pouch and cylindrical cells, in module or cell-to-pack designs.

  • Machined channels, sealed lid

Serpentine or parallel channels milled into the base, with the lid sealed by an O-ring and fasteners. This construction suits engineering samples, pilot and low-volume plates, and design changes between revisions.

    Construction guide
  • Integrated plate-in-tray

Some packs combine the coolant channels with the pack floor, so the plate becomes part of the structure. Machining, sealing and inspection then follow the enclosure.

Flatness, sealing and interface requirements

  • 01

    Contact face flatness

The module contact face controls the gap filler thickness. We fix the fixture design and machining sequence for it at the DFM review and measure it on a CMM.

  • 02

    Ports and manifolds

Inlet and outlet ports, quick-connector bosses and manifold blocks must mate with your fittings. We machine them to your fitting specification.

  • 03

    O-ring grooves and mounting bosses

Groove geometry carries the lid seal, and boss position locates the plate in the pack. We hold both relative to the pack datums on your drawing.

  • 04

    Distortion control

A joining step adds heat that can distort the plate. When a plate is joined, we plan final machining of critical faces after joining, so distortion does not reach the contact face.

Materials

Battery cooling plate materials

  • Aluminum 6061

A usual alloy for machined cooling plates, with channels, ports and manifolds machined to your drawing. Most packs run water and ethylene glycol (WEG).

    Aluminum components
  • Aluminum 6063

The other usual alloy for machined plates: contact face, ports and O-ring grooves machined to your drawing, coated when your drawing specifies it.

  • Coatings and insulation

An external coating or electrical insulation film is applied when your drawing specifies it, for example hard anodizing.

FAQs

Battery cooling plate FAQ

Upload drawings
What is the difference between a battery cooling plate and a liquid cold plate?
A battery cooling plate is a liquid cold plate designed for battery cells or modules: usually larger and thinner, with tight flatness over a big area. Our liquid cold plates for power electronics are smaller plates with concentrated heat sources.
Which construction is best for a battery cooling plate?
Brazed designs suit complex channel layouts at higher volumes; machined channels with a sealed lid suit engineering samples and low volumes. We recommend one after the DFM review; brazed and FSW constructions are options on request.
How do you control flatness on large plates?
Through fixture design, the machining sequence and CMM verification of the contact face.
Are plates leak tested one by one?
We leak test plates to your specification.
What documentation do you supply with battery cooling plates?
On request, we supply the documents your program needs: FAI or inspection reports, CMM flatness data and material certificates (MTRs). Parts are made under an ISO 9001-certified quality system. PPAP-style documentation on request (to validate by DEK), and IMDS data on request.
