Overview

Differential components machined to drawing

A differential splits drive torque between two wheels and lets them turn at different speeds through a corner. DekAutomotive machines the differential housing, the differential case, covers, bearing caps and flanges to OEM drawings, for ICE axles and EV e-axles.

From engineering samples to repeat production, bearing bores and flange runout are CMM inspected and each batch is traceable. All sit within our transmission and driveline components, alongside gearbox housing machining and transmission housings.

What we machine

Differential components we machine

  • 01
    Differential housings
  • 02
    Differential cases
  • 03
    Covers and bearing caps
  • 04
    Companion and output flanges
  • Differential housings

Ductile iron housings for axle center sections, machined from cast blanks to your drawing. We finish the carrier and pinion bearing bores, faces and threads that hold the bearings and the oil.

    Bore and seat practice
  • Differential cases

Ductile iron or forged steel blanks, with machined bearing journals, ring-gear flange, cross-shaft bore and window profiles. The case is a structural rotating part: we control dimensions, material and documentation; your engineering team owns the design validation.

    CMM inspection
  • Covers and bearing caps

Covers close the housing and carry the fill and drain ports. Bearing caps and adjusters clamp the carrier bearings and are machined as a matched set with the housing, with machined sealing faces and bolt patterns.

    Bearing carriers
  • Companion and output flanges

Companion and output flanges turned and drilled to drawing, in forged or alloy steel such as 4140. Faces, bores and bolt patterns follow your drawing and its GD&T.

Critical features on housings and cases

  • 01

    Carrier bearing bores

Diameter, roundness and coaxiality set bearing preload and bearing life. We finish the bores in one setup with the caps installed and check coaxiality by CMM.

  • 02

    Ring-gear mounting flange

Runout and flatness drive gear mesh and noise. The flange is turned in the same setup as the bearing journals, and runout is measured to the bearing axis.

  • 03

    Cross-shaft bore

Position and perpendicularity keep the spider gears aligned. We bore it from the case datum and check true position by CMM.

  • 04

    Pinion bore

Perpendicularity to the carrier bearing axis and pinion offset set the mesh pattern. We machine it with the carrier bores in one clamping where possible.

  • 05

    Sealing faces

Flatness of the sealing faces keeps the axle oil-tight. The faces are face milled and their flatness is measured.

Materials

Differential component materials and blanks

  • Ductile iron ASTM A536

ASTM A536 65-45-12 or 80-55-06 (EN-GJS-500-7, EN-GJS-600-3) for axle housings and differential cases; cast blanks machined to your drawing.

  • Cast aluminum A356-T6

Cast aluminum A356-T6 or A380 for the EV e-axle and reducer housings that carry the differential, machined to your drawing.

    Aluminum components
  • Alloy steel 4140

Forged or alloy steel, for example 4140, for differential cases in high-torque drivelines and for companion and output flanges.

Why Choose Us

Why engineers choose our differential components

  • 01

    CMM-verified bores

Bearing bore coaxiality and flange runout are checked by CMM to the bearing axis.

  • 02

    Batch traceability

Each batch is traceable, with material certificates on request.

  • 03

    Samples to repeat runs

Housings and cases machined to your drawing, from engineering samples to repeat production.

FAQs

Differential components FAQ

Upload drawings
What are the main components of a differential?
The housing, the differential case, the ring gear and pinion, the side gears, the spider gears on a cross shaft, the carrier bearings and the covers.
What are the four types of differentials?
Open, limited-slip, locking and torque-vectoring. We machine the housings and cases for the type your program specifies.
Which differential components does DekAutomotive machine?
Housings, cases, covers, bearing caps and flanges to your drawing.
Do you machine aluminum e-axle differential housings?
Cast aluminum housings for EV drive units are within our EV scope.
How do you verify flange runout and bearing bore alignment?
By CMM, measuring runout and coaxiality to the carrier bearing axis, with SPC on repeat batches when the program requires it.
