Overview

Cylinder head machining to OEM drawings

DekAutomotive machines new cylinder heads from aluminum cast blanks to OEM drawings for engine teams at OEMs, Tier suppliers and motorsport engineering teams: engineering samples, validation parts, pilot, low-volume and repeat production.

Each batch is CMM inspected and keeps its material traceability, with inspection reports on request. Heads belong to our powertrain components range, alongside motor housings for e-drive and hybrid programs; see our order process.

What we machine

Cylinder head machining operations

  • 01
    Datum establishment
  • 02
    Deck (fire) face milling
  • 03
    Cam bore line boring
  • 04
    Valve seat and guide bores
  • 05
    Injector and spark plug bores
  • Datum establishment

Locating pads and holes are machined on the casting first, so every later operation references the drawing datums and not the raw cast surface. Valve train, combustion chamber roof, ports and cooling circuit all locate from these datums.

    5-axis machining
  • Deck (fire) face milling

The deck face seals against the head gasket, usually an MLS gasket, and is machined flat and to the specified roughness. Its bolt pattern must agree with the engine block deck, so both parts are often quoted together.

    Engine block parts
  • Cam bore line boring

Cam caps are fitted and torqued, then the camshaft bores are line bored as one axis, so coaxiality along the camshaft axis is set in a single operation and read per ASME Y14.5 / ISO 1101.

    GD&T in powertrain
  • Valve seat and guide bores

Seat insert pockets and guide bores are machined in one setup per valve, so seat-to-guide concentricity holds. Seat angle and guide bore diameter are then verified by CMM and form gauges.

    CMM inspection
  • Injector and spark plug bores

Injector and spark plug bores and their sealing faces are positioned to the combustion chamber geometry; injector bore true position is checked by CMM against the combustion chamber and deck.

Critical tolerances and features

  • 01

    Deck face flatness and roughness

Deck flatness and roughness set how the head gasket seals. We check them with a CMM flatness map and a roughness tester.

  • 02

    Cam bore alignment and diameter

Coaxiality along the camshaft axis and bore diameter define how the camshaft bores line up. Both are measured by CMM and read per ASME Y14.5 / ISO 1101.

  • 03

    Seat-to-guide concentricity

Seat-to-guide concentricity, seat angle and guide bore diameter define each valve seat and guide pair. We verify them by CMM and form gauges.

  • 04

    Injector bore true position

The injector bore must sit in true position to the combustion chamber and the deck. Its position is measured by CMM against the drawing datums.

  • 05

    Head bolt hole position

Head bolt holes are held in true position to the block pattern so the head matches the engine block. We measure their position by CMM.

Materials

Cylinder head materials and blanks

  • Aluminum A356-T6

A356-T6 cast blanks machined to drawing: the common choice for passenger car and light engine heads, where T6 heat treatment gives strength and stable machining.

  • Aluminum A319

A319 cast blanks machined to drawing for heads where the casting supplier specifies a copper-bearing alloy. Porosity acceptance on machined surfaces is agreed before the first parts.

  • Seat and guide materials

Seat insert and guide materials are customer-supplied or specified on the drawing, alongside the casting specification settled before the first parts.

FAQs

Cylinder head machining FAQ

Upload drawings
Can new cylinder heads be machined for engine programs?
Yes. New heads are machined from castings on CNC equipment in a fixed sequence, and we support engine development, validation, low-volume and repeat programs.
Which materials do you machine for cylinder heads?
Mainly heat-treated cast aluminum such as A356-T6.
How do you control deck-face flatness and seat-guide concentricity?
By the fixture and datum strategy, dedicated seat-and-guide tooling and CMM verification, with SPC on repeat batches when required.
Can you machine heads from our castings?
Yes, customer-supplied castings can be machined to your drawing, with incoming inspection of the castings before machining.
