Overview

Engine block machining for OEM engine programs

DekAutomotive machines new engine blocks and engine block components from castings to OEM drawings: crankcases, main bearing caps, bedplates and ladder frames, front and timing covers, as part of our powertrain components.

We work for OEM engine departments, Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers and motorsport engineering teams, from engineering samples to low-volume and repeat production. When cylinder head machining is in the same program, both parts are fixtured from compatible datums.

What we machine

Engine block components we machine

  • 01
    Engine blocks and crankcases
  • 02
    Main bearing caps
  • 03
    Bedplates and ladder frames
  • 04
    Front and timing covers
  • 05
    Oil pan rails, sump adapters
  • Engine blocks and crankcases

Deck faces, cylinder bores, main bearing line bores, cam tunnel, threaded holes and deep-hole drilling of oil galleries, all machined from datum pads on the casting so each feature stays placed relative to the crank axis.

    5-axis machining
  • Main bearing caps

Main bearing caps are machined as a set with the block: caps installed and torqued, then the main bores line bored in one pass along the crank axis so the line bore stays true.

    Shaft components
  • Bedplates and ladder frames

Large flat parts that close the crankcase and carry the main bearing halves. Main bore alignment against the drawing datums is verified by CMM inspection.

  • Front and timing covers

Front and timing covers carry sealing faces, seal bores and bolt patterns that must align with the crank and cam axes of the block they close.

  • Oil pan rails, sump adapters

Flat sealing faces and threaded holes on the lower block interface. The pan rail side usually carries the datum pads and dowel holes machined first on the casting.

Critical features in engine block machining

  • 01

Deck face flatness and deck height

The deck face is set for flatness and deck height relative to the crank axis. Both V-block decks or the single inline deck are milled from the casting datums and checked on CMM.

  • 02

    Cylinder bore geometry

Bore diameter, cylindricity, position and perpendicularity to the crank axis are toleranced per ASME Y14.5 / ISO 1101 on your drawing. We check them with bore gauges and CMM.

  • 03

    Main bearing bore alignment

The main bores define the crankshaft axis every other feature refers to. They are line bored in one pass with the caps torqued, then checked on CMM for alignment and diameter.

  • 04

    Oil and coolant gallery position

Galleries must break through at the right location into the water jacket and main bearing feeds. We check true position on CMM, with an endoscope where specified.

  • 05

    Thread quality and depth

Head bolt and main cap bolt holes are drilled and tapped or thread milled to the drawing. Thread quality and depth are checked with go / no-go gauges.

Materials

Engine block materials and blanks

  • Aluminum A319 or A356

Cast aluminum blanks for light passenger car and motorsport blocks, with cast-in iron liners, machined to your drawing.

  • Cast-in iron liners

Liners cast into aluminum blocks are bored to size; the aluminum around them needs care against distortion during boring.

  • Gray cast iron (ASTM A48)

Cast blanks for diesel and commercial vehicle blocks. Gray iron machines well; the as-cast skin carries abrasive scale.

Deck, bores and main bore alignment checked on CMM against your datums.

  • 03

    Samples to repeat lots

Engineering samples, validation parts, low-volume and repeat production.

FAQs

Engine block machining FAQ

Upload drawings
In what order should an engine block be machined?
Datums first, then the deck and pan rails, cylinder bores, main bearing line boring with the caps torqued, galleries and threads, bore finishing and cleaning. We follow the sequence and datums set by the OEM drawing.
Can you machine blocks for engine development and low-volume programs?
Yes: engineering samples, validation lots and low-volume repeat batches are part of our range.
Which block materials do you machine?
Cast aluminum and cast iron grades as specified on the drawing.
How is main bore alignment verified?
By CMM measurement of line-bore position and diameter along the crank axis, and SPC on repeat batches if your program requires it.
