Overview

Gearbox housing machining to OEM drawings

A gearbox housing supports the bearings and shafts, keeps the gears in mesh at the right center distance and contains the oil. We machine it to OEM drawings on cast or billet blanks, within our transmission and gearbox components range.

Each program, from engineering samples to repeat production, gets material traceability and CMM verification of bearing bores and faces, following our approach to CMM inspection of complex housings. Inspection reports are available on request.

Machining strategy and related housings

  • 01
    Bearing bores and faces
  • 02
    Thin walls and clean parts
  • 03
    Transmission housings
  • 04
    Clutch housings
  • 05
    Differential housings
  • Bearing bores and faces

We finish bearing bores and faces in as few setups as possible, on 5-axis or horizontal machining centers, so re-clamping does not lose their relationship. Bores that span both halves are line bored; back boring or back facing reaches features behind a wall.

  • Thin walls and clean parts

The fixture supports thin walls so that clamping does not move the bores once the part is released. Intersections are deburred and the housing is washed before inspection.

  • Transmission housings

Transmission housings carry bearing bores, split faces and threaded holes like a gearbox housing. We machine them to your drawing with CMM verification; inspection reports are available on request.

    Transmission housings
  • Clutch housings

Clutch housings belong to the same transmission and gearbox components range. We machine them to your drawing with material traceability; inspection reports are available on request.

    Clutch housings
  • Differential housings

Differential housings and components are grouped with gearbox housings in our transmission range, machined to drawing and CMM verified, with inspection reports on request.

Critical features in gearbox housing machining

  • 01

    Bearing bores

Diameter, coaxiality and center distance set gear mesh, noise and bearing life. We finish them in minimal setups, line bore across both halves and check position and coaxiality by CMM.

  • 02

    Split and mating faces

Flatness keeps the split line oil-tight. We face mill these faces with a fixture that limits wall distortion, then measure flatness.

  • 03

    Seal bores and shaft openings

Concentricity to the bearing bore keeps the lip seal working. Each seal bore is machined in the same setup as its related bearing bore.

  • 04

Threads, oil gallery and breather ports

Thread class, depth and position matter for assembly and lubrication. Holes are tapped or thread milled, then gauged.

  • 05

    Dowel holes

Dowels locate the two halves and the mating housing. We drill and ream them from the bearing bore datums, with GD&T per your drawing to ASME Y14.5 or ISO 1101.

Materials

Gearbox housing materials and blanks

  • HPDC A380 or ADC12

HPDC aluminum blanks for production housings of reducers and transmissions. We do not produce castings; we machine cast blanks to your drawing.

    Aluminum components
  • Gravity-cast A356-T6

Gravity-cast aluminum blanks for gearbox housings that need higher strength or ductility, machined to your drawing.

  • Magnesium AZ91D

Magnesium cast blanks, machined only where your drawing specifies this alloy for the gearbox housing.

  • Billet 6061-T6 or 7075-T6

Billet blanks for engineering samples before the casting tool exists, with bearing bores and faces machined to your drawing.

FAQs

Gearbox housing FAQ

Upload drawings
What is a gearbox housing?
The rigid casing that locates the shafts and bearings of a gearbox, keeps the gears aligned and holds the lubricant.
What drives the cost of gearbox housing machining?
Casting or billet blank, number of setups, bore tolerances and annual volume. We quote from your drawing; there is no price list.
Can you machine customer-supplied castings?
Yes, cast blanks supplied by you can be machined to drawing.
How do you verify bearing bore alignment?
By CMM measurement of bore position, coaxiality and center distance, with SPC on repeat batches when required.
Do you machine EV reducer housings?
EV reducer and e-axle gearbox housings are an example application.
