Overview

Valve body machining to OEM and Tier drawings

The valve body is the hydraulic control unit of an automatic transmission, DCT or wet-clutch e-axle, routing pressurized fluid through spool valves and solenoids. We machine valve bodies and channel plates to OEM and Tier drawings, with our other transmission and gearbox components.

Programs run from engineering samples and validation lots to repeat production; spool bores, sealing faces and channel intersections are inspected for each batch, with inspection reports on request. See our order process.

What we machine

What makes valve body machining demanding

  • 01
    Dense, intersecting channels
  • 02
    Small, precise spool bores
  • 03
    Large flat sealing faces
  • 04
    Thin walls in die-cast parts
  • 05
    Related transmission parts
  • Dense, intersecting channels

Oil passages cross inside a compact block, and every intersection leaves an internal edge that is hard to reach and easy to leave burred. We drill in an order that lets each intersection be reached and checked, and long passages follow deep hole drilling practice.

    Deep hole drilling
  • Small, precise spool bores

Spools slide in bores with a small radial clearance, so diameter, roundness, straightness and surface finish decide leakage and whether a spool sticks. We finish bore or ream them in one setup and agree the bore requirements per drawing at the DFM review.

  • Large flat sealing faces

The channel face seals against the separator plate, which carries the check balls and orifices between the upper and lower halves; a face that is not flat leaks between circuits. We face mill it with a fixturing plan that limits distortion and measure its flatness.

    CMM inspection
  • Thin walls in die-cast parts

Clamping force can distort a thin-walled casting, and the bores move once it is released. We machine bores and faces from one datum structure with minimal re-clamping, then check their position and parallelism on a CMM.

  • Related transmission parts

Valve bodies are carried by transmission housings in automatic transmissions, and we also machine gearbox housings for reducers and manual gearboxes. We machine new parts to your specification; we do not design transmissions.

Critical features and how we control them

  • 01

    Spool bores

Diameter, roundness, cylindricity, straightness and surface finish set spool clearance and leakage. We finish bore or ream each bore in one setup, with requirements agreed at the DFM review.

  • 02

    Bore alignment

Bores must hold true position and parallelism to each other per your drawing. We machine them from one datum structure with minimal re-clamping, then check them on a CMM.

  • 03

    Sealing face (separator plate side)

Flatness and surface finish decide whether the face seals between circuits. We face mill with a fixturing plan that limits distortion, then measure flatness.

  • 04

    Channel intersections

Intersections must be burr-free with no loose particles, since a chip can make a spool stick. A defined deburring operation is followed by washing and a residual-particle check.

  • 05

    Solenoid seats

Bore diameter, depth and position of each solenoid seat must match the related spool bores. We machine the seats in the same setup as those spool bores.

Materials

Valve body materials and blanks

  • Die-cast aluminum A380

The most common valve body alloy (ASTM B85). We machine cast blanks to your drawing and its porosity criteria, and report porosity findings.

    Aluminum components
  • ADC12 (JIS H 5302)

Japanese die-casting alloy close to A383, common on drawings from Asian programs. Cast blanks are machined to drawing and to its porosity criteria.

  • AlSi die-casting alloys

Other AlSi die-casting alloys are machined when the drawing specifies them, with the same porosity criteria and findings reporting as A380 and ADC12.

  • Wrought 6061

Billet engineering samples machined from 6061 to test the hydraulic circuit before the casting tool exists.

Why Choose Us

Why engineers choose our valve bodies

  • 01

    Planned deburring

Intersections are opened in an order that lets each one be reached and checked.

  • 02

    CMM inspection

Bore position and face flatness are checked against your drawing datums.

  • 03

    Samples to repeat runs

Billet samples first, then a frozen process route on every repeat batch.

FAQs

Valve body machining FAQ

Upload drawings
What exactly does a valve body do?
It directs pressurized transmission fluid through channels and spool valves to engage clutches and control shifting, so its machining accuracy directly affects shift quality.
Which alloys do you machine for valve bodies?
Mainly die-cast aluminum such as A380 and ADC12, plus wrought 6061 for engineering samples.
How do you remove burrs from intersecting channels?
With a defined deburring operation chosen for the channel layout, followed by washing and a check for residual particles.
Can you meet ISO 16232 / VDA 19.1 cleanliness limits?
We wash the parts and analyze residual particles against the limit and method on your drawing.
How do you measure spool bores?
With CMM for position and dedicated bore gauging for diameter and form, with SPC on repeat batches when required.
What documentation do you supply for valve bodies?
On request, we supply the documents your program needs: FAI and inspection reports, cleanliness reports where required and material certificates (MTRs). Parts are made under an ISO 9001-certified quality system. PPAP-style documentation on request (to validate by DEK).
